A snowfall warning caught us by surprise on Saturday. Well, okay I thought – we can use the moisture. And if we get an inch or two or snow its no big deal because it usually rains quickly and disappears. I made a pot of soup and took another shot at perfecting a cornbread recipe we have been testing. Looks perfect but it needed another five minutes for the middle to be totally set.
Then I went outside and filled the bird feeders and shot some video around the yard. I keep taking this video in the same spot on the patio to document our first year here, so bear with me.
Nice, quiet and peaceful countryside.
And then… the snow didn’t stop. After watching the men’s Olympic hockey game (gold medal – Yay!) on Sunday morning we went outside and started digging out the shrubs and trees around the property. The power went out at noon, while we were outside. I actually loved not hearing the buzz of electricity in the house. It was incredibly quiet except for the thundering avalanche of snow that kept falling off the roof.
Lunch time – have to try that cornbread. Reading, napping, eating again (thank goodness for a propane BBQ.) Hmmm, wonder what the rest of Nanaimo is doing? Without internet, a phone or cell service, we were hanging out old school unless we decided to venture into town. Keith was pretty impressed that a snowplow went down our street. We didn’t really think they came out this far. He also regaled me of stories about growing up on his grandparent’s farm in the middle of nowhere Saskatchewan when they didn’t have electricity or Angry Birds. And then he got bored and went to the other end of the house.
The power came back around 8 pm just as we were having a nice candlelight dinner and pouting because we were missing the Closing Ceremonies. We watched the news and the weather where they promised that it would be raining by the morning with a high of 3 degrees. And we made a list of things to buy to be better prepared for the next power outage – batteries and a cell phone booster.
And IT JUST KEPT SNOWING!
We found out that all the Nanaimo is getting smacked with this weather and I have had several emails from friends lamenting the flickering lights and the fact that they want to take a ‘snow day’. I am just happy the water pumps are working. Gets pretty simple out here.
