It warmed up this week and we had several days of foggy, drizzly weather. Perfect winter weather for this time of year. We put some lights in the greenhouse to help overwinter some geranium pots and hanging baskets. You can see this area of the property from the road so it looks kind of neat at night.

There is blueberry bushes and grapes planted along the back fence. The grapes are cuttings from the plants that were growing on the deck at our old house. I originally got them from my friends dad’s yard after he passed away. He and I used to garden together so I am hoping they will take here. I would love to build a pergola back here so we can have a place to sit and enjoy the orchard and garden.

I have never had a greenhouse before so I am pretty thrilled to have this new one in the garden. It is very well built with electrical and water hooked up. It also has an automatic venting system and a cement walkway. There is gravel on one side and a soil bed on the other. You can see the wooden shelf that is on one side and there is a rack on the other.

When we moved here in August there was a cucumber growing in the soil and it produced a great crop of cukes. We totally ignored it and didn’t water it and it just kept on going until the fall.

Those bushes in the foreground are currants. We also have 2 gooseberry bushes that have tremendous thorns on them. You can see the fall rye that we planted in September is covering a part of the lower bed. We raked up and scattered the apple and plum tree leaves on the other beds and will dig them under in the spring.

This vegetable plot is on a slope and you can see the different material that has been used to make the walls. There are cement blocks at the top with split logs to cover up the openings. Logs were used in the two other walls. I am suspicious of the plastic that is peeking out from under the soil in the last wall. There was too much old plastic used around this property and it is a headache to cleanup once it starts breaking down.

I did a good batch of weeding in these beds this week once the weather warmed up. It is nice that the soil is still so pliable and doing these chores now will put us ahead for early spring planting. We are going to cut some steps into the hill so it is easier to get around this part of the garden.

The broccoli and kale are holding up well through the cold spells that we have had lately. You can see there is still traces of snow from the flurries we had on Friday. I am pleased to say that we had much less snow out here there was in town. Love being at sea level!
